Mr. O, when considering a “franchise” quarterback, what in your opinion is required to be designated that title? Is it as simple as being the No. 1 quarterback for the team? And what does Nick Foles have to accomplish for him to be considered a success for the Jaguars? He already has accomplished (IMO) more than Derek Carr ($125 million), Kirk Cousins ($84 million) and Matt Stafford ($130 million). I think we got a steal with him while not breaking the bank.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The phrase \u201cfranchise quarterback\u201d means different things to different people. Some use the phrase with essentially any quarterback who has earned a mega second contract. I admit to slipping at times and using that definition; I am, contrary to the opinions of many readers, an imperfect man with at least two notable flaws. It\u2019s more accurate to say a franchise quarterback needs to be capable of lifting teammates to victories that wouldn\u2019t have happened with a lesser quarterback \u2013 and to be the focal point of multiple playoff teams. Foles played like that sort of quarterback at times in Philadelphia. What must he do to be a success for the Jaguars? I\u2019m sure many observers would say he must lead them to a Super Bowl. I would say a Super Bowl appearance or multiple playoff appearances. That would make things fun around here for a while, and wouldn\u2019t that be nice?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

I’d bet Foles has watched a boatload of film on the offensive side of the Jags ’17 and ’18 season. I’m guessing the Jags scouts have no clue about performing as a Super Bowl Most Valuable Player. I doubt the question was about getting advice about which players may help the offense, but more about what TYPE of players he meshes well with. A scout might plug in any number of players names that the draft might provide. To me, BOTH are valuable opinions. Your “He\u2019s a quarterback; he\u2019s not a college scout” was off the mark.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

You\u2019re referencing a recent O-Zone question asking if the Jaguars would consult with Foles before the upcoming 2019 NFL Draft. My answer essentially was that Foles is a quarterback and not a scout. This answer was \u201cawesome.\u201d I enjoyed rereading it as much as I enjoyed writing it \u2013 and I really<\/em> enjoyed writing it. I only regret I could only write it once.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

I indeed worked for the Times-Union from August 1988 until July 2001. I began as a part-time employee answering telephones on Friday nights in the fall and assisting with high-school sports, then covered high schools full time before covering University of Florida athletics \u2013 and eventually, the Jaguars. I worked primarily out of the Times-Union\u2019s building on 1 Riverside Avenue for the first five years of that stretch, so reading Friday of the paper moving from that building to the Wells Fargo Building was a sad day. I worked with many good people at the Times-Union and have many great memories from that building. I was fortunate to begin my career when newspapers were strong and I left shortly before the business began changing dramatically, changes that led eventually to Friday\u2019s move. When I worked at the newspaper, it was hard to imagine staff reductions of the kind that have ransacked the industry. It\u2019s a different journalism era now, and the demise\/decline of newspapers sure doesn\u2019t make it a better one.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Zone, I would also not be surprised if the Jags went running back in the second or third round. After using the No. 4 overall pick on a running back in 2017, throwing away a fifth-round pick in exchange for Carlos Hyde’s 183 yard rushing contribution in 2018, and not pursuing Jordan Howard this offseason for a 2020 sixth-round pick makes me believe this front office possesses the capacity for another such poor decision when there will be very capable rushers available Day 3.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

John, if the move at No. 7 is offensive tackle, then it needs to be a left tackle. He has to be better than Cam Robinson for it to be worth the seventh pick.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

I would have agreed wholeheartedly with this until the last several seasons. But right tackle and left tackle no longer are as dramatically different as they were a decade or two ago.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

I believe your point is many quarterbacks who succeeded in Super Bowls struggled after that. That\u2019s true, but that doesn\u2019t mean Foles will fail. I tend to not try to compare quarterbacks from other situations or eras because circumstances surrounding a quarterback have much to do with success or failure. All of the quarterbacks you mention had big-time success for stretches when they had good teams around them. Foles has shown the ability to do that. I think the Jaguars will have a pretty good team around Foles next season. I don\u2019t know who I would compare him to, but it doesn\u2019t concern me that other quarterbacks have struggled after having Super Bowl success. The NFL is hard. A lot must go right for any quarterback to succeed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It’s not as if the Jaguars\u2019 receiving corps is a bunch of seventh-round picks. Dede Westbrook and Marqise Lee both are Biletnikoff Award winners \u2013 Westbrook finished fourth in Heisman voting and Lee was projected to be a first-round pick. DJ Chark Jr. was taken in the second round and has size and speed at 6-feet-4 and a 4.34-second 40-yard dash. Who will be the slot receiver, is it Lee?<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The more I think about it, pass rushing defensive end feels like a major need. What if Yannik gets hurt? It felt really effective when he and Dante both rushed on guaranteed passing downs. It seems like our D could use another such player even if everyone stays healthy. BAP-rusher<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This would not be shocking. The quality at the top of the draft at defensive line is very strong, and pass rushers are always a need. I would say the chances of the Jaguars selecting defensive line in Round 1 in the 2019 NFL are only behind offensive line with tight end third.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

I doubt he was laughing. That\u2019s because in addition to having been a Hall of Fame-level talent, former Jaguars left tackle Tony Boselli also understands the game. Left tackles were significantly more important than right tackles when Boselli played. Now? Not as much.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
